IELTS Writing Task 2: Gender Equality in the Workplace (Band 9 Sample)
This agree/disagree question observes that certain jobs are still dominated by one gender and asks whether men and women should have an equal opportunity to do any job. A band-9 response states a clear opinion, argues it consistently, and deals fairly with the obvious counter-argument. Below is a model answer of roughly 285 words that firmly agrees, followed by a breakdown of why it scores 9 on all four criteria.

01 · The task
In many countries, some professions are still dominated by men and others by women. Some people believe that men and women should have an equal opportunity to work in any profession. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
02 · Band 9 sample answer
284 words · Band 9It remains true that certain careers — engineering or the armed forces, for instance — are overwhelmingly male, while nursing and primary teaching are largely female. I strongly agree that men and women should be free to pursue any profession they choose, since restricting opportunity by gender is both unfair and wasteful.
1. Why equal opportunity is right
The most compelling argument is one of basic fairness. A person's aptitude for a job depends on their skills, character and dedication, not on their sex, so denying a capable woman a place in engineering, or a caring man a role in childcare, is plainly unjust. It is also self-defeating for society, because when half the population is discouraged from entering a field, employers lose access to a huge pool of talent and end up with a narrower, weaker workforce.
2. Addressing the objection
Some argue that the existing imbalance simply reflects natural preferences, and there is a grain of truth in this. However, those preferences are shaped largely by stereotypes and upbringing rather than fixed ability, and where women or men have been actively encouraged into non-traditional roles, they have consistently thrived. The imbalance is therefore a habit to be challenged, not a rule to be accepted.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that every profession should be open equally to both sexes. Judging people by their competence rather than their gender is not only the fairest approach but also the one that serves society best.
03 · Why this scores Band 9
The position — "I strongly agree" — is stated in the introduction and defended throughout with two developed reasons (fairness and the waste of talent). The opposing "natural preferences" view is acknowledged and then answered, so the essay is fully responsive rather than one-sided.
Each paragraph has a single controlling idea — the case for equality, then the rebuttal of the objection — with the stance flagged early and restated at the end. Linking is smooth and purposeful: "The most compelling argument is...", "It is also self-defeating...", "Some argue that... However...", "In conclusion...".
Vocabulary is precise and idiomatic — "pursue any profession", "a huge pool of talent", "non-traditional roles", "shaped by stereotypes", "judging people by their competence" — expressing an abstract social argument with confident collocation rather than filler.
A wide range is controlled accurately: a fronted concessive ("while nursing and primary teaching are largely female"), a causal "because" clause carrying a consequence ("because when half the population is discouraged..., employers lose access..."), and a contrast pair ("a habit to be challenged, not a rule to be accepted"). The writing stays error-free.

05 · Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pick a side, or can I stay neutral?
Give a clear opinion. This model states "I strongly agree" and defends it. A firm, consistent stance scores higher on Task Response than a fence-sitting answer that never commits.
Should I still mention the opposing view?
Yes — the strongest agree/disagree essays acknowledge and answer the counter-argument. Here the "natural preferences" objection is raised and then rebutted, which shows balance without weakening the position.
Is this a sensitive topic I should avoid?
Not at all. IELTS expects a reasoned, respectful argument. Focus on fairness, ability and the practical benefits to society, and avoid sweeping or offensive generalisations about either gender.
How long should the essay be?
At least 250 words; a band-9 answer is usually 260–290. This model is 284 words, enough to argue the case and rebut the objection without padding.
