IELTS Writing Task 2: Working From Home (Band 9 Sample)
This "do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages" question asks whether the growing trend of working from home is, on balance, positive. A band-9 response weighs both sides but reaches a clear overall judgement. Below is a model answer of roughly 280 words, followed by a breakdown of why it scores 9 on all four criteria.

01 · The task
An increasing number of people now work from home rather than in a traditional workplace. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
02 · Band 9 sample answer
282 words · Band 9Remote working, once a rare privilege, has become a normal way of life for millions of employees. While it undoubtedly brings some drawbacks, I firmly believe that for most office-based roles the advantages of working from home clearly outweigh them.
1. The advantages
The most obvious benefit is the time and money saved by not commuting. Employees who once spent hours travelling can now devote that time to work, family or rest, which tends to improve both their productivity and their wellbeing. Flexibility is a second major gain: being able to arrange the working day around personal commitments makes it far easier for parents and carers, in particular, to stay in employment. Employers benefit too, since they can recruit talented people regardless of where they live and cut the cost of expensive office space.
2. The disadvantages, and why they are smaller
There are, of course, downsides. Some people struggle to separate work from home life and end up working longer hours, while others feel isolated without the social contact of an office. Collaboration and the informal exchange of ideas can also suffer. However, these problems are largely manageable — a dedicated workspace, clear boundaries and occasional team meetings go a long way towards solving them, which is why I consider the disadvantages the lesser concern.
In conclusion, although working from home can blur boundaries and reduce social interaction, I am convinced its benefits are greater, because the flexibility and time it gives back to employees improve both their quality of life and, in many cases, their performance.
03 · Why this scores Band 9
The essay answers the exact question — do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages — with a clear verdict ("the advantages... clearly outweigh them"), qualified sensibly ("for most office-based roles"). Both sides are developed, but the answer commits rather than sitting on the fence.
It is organised as advantages then disadvantages, each fully developed, with the judgement framed at the start and end. Cohesion is fluent and varied — "The most obvious benefit is...", "A second major gain...", "There are, of course, downsides", "However" — and each paragraph keeps to one idea.
Vocabulary is precise and idiomatic — "a rare privilege", "arrange the working day around personal commitments", "blur boundaries", "go a long way towards", "the lesser concern" — with natural collocation rather than filler.
A wide range is controlled accurately: a reduced clause ("once a rare privilege"), a relative clause ("Employees who once spent hours travelling"), and a concessive ("although working from home can blur boundaries..."). The final because-clause delivers the judgement, and the writing is error-free.

05 · Frequently asked questions
How do I answer a "do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages" question?
Discuss both, but reach a clear verdict on which is greater. This model develops the advantages, then the disadvantages, and states in both the introduction and conclusion that the advantages win. A neutral answer scores poorly.
Can I qualify my position?
Yes, and it often strengthens the essay. Here the answer limits its claim to "most office-based roles", which acknowledges that manual jobs cannot be done remotely without weakening the main argument.
Should I write about both employees and employers?
It adds depth if relevant. This model notes benefits for both sides (time saved for workers, wider recruitment and lower costs for firms), which develops the "advantages" more fully — but keep the focus on answering the question.
How long should the essay be?
At least 250 words; a band-9 answer is usually 260–290. This model is 282 words, enough to weigh both sides and land a clear judgement without padding.
