IELTS Writing Task 2: Working From Home (Band 9 Sample)

Remote working, once a rare privilege, has become a normal way of life for millions of employees. While it undoubtedly brings some drawbacks, I firmly believe that for most office-based roles the advantages of working from home clearly outweigh them.

1. The advantages

The most obvious benefit is the time and money saved by not commuting. Employees who once spent hours travelling can now devote that time to work, family or rest, which tends to improve both their productivity and their wellbeing. Flexibility is a second major gain: being able to arrange the working day around personal commitments makes it far easier for parents and carers, in particular, to stay in employment. Employers benefit too, since they can recruit talented people regardless of where they live and cut the cost of expensive office space.

2. The disadvantages, and why they are smaller

There are, of course, downsides. Some people struggle to separate work from home life and end up working longer hours, while others feel isolated without the social contact of an office. Collaboration and the informal exchange of ideas can also suffer. However, these problems are largely manageable — a dedicated workspace, clear boundaries and occasional team meetings go a long way towards solving them, which is why I consider the disadvantages the lesser concern.

In conclusion, although working from home can blur boundaries and reduce social interaction, I am convinced its benefits are greater, because the flexibility and time it gives back to employees improve both their quality of life and, in many cases, their performance.
