IELTS Writing Task 2: Tourism Benefits & Drawbacks (Band 9 Sample)

Over the past few decades, international tourism has expanded dramatically, bringing millions of visitors to destinations that once saw very few. This growth offers host countries significant benefits, but it also carries real costs, both of which this essay will examine.

1. The advantages

The most obvious benefit is economic. Tourism brings in a great deal of foreign money and creates jobs across a wide range of sectors, from hotels and restaurants to transport and handicrafts, which is especially valuable for developing economies with few other industries. It can also fund the preservation of historic sites and natural areas that might otherwise fall into neglect. Beyond money, tourism fosters cultural exchange, allowing local people and visitors to learn about one another and, ideally, to become more open-minded as a result.

2. The disadvantages

However, the drawbacks can be serious. Popular destinations often suffer from overcrowding, rising prices and environmental damage, as fragile sites are worn down by sheer numbers and local residents are priced out of their own neighbourhoods. There is also a cultural cost: to satisfy tourists, some communities end up turning their traditions into a commercial performance, gradually losing their authenticity. Worse still, economies that become over-reliant on tourism are dangerously exposed to shocks such as recessions or pandemics.

In conclusion, tourism can be a powerful engine for jobs, investment and cultural understanding, but if it is poorly managed it threatens the environment, local communities and the very character that attracted visitors in the first place. The key, therefore, lies in developing tourism sustainably rather than simply maximising numbers.
