IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe an Invention (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe an important invention and to explain the difference it has made. A band-9 answer picks something you can genuinely discuss, explains clearly what it does, and develops one strong point about how it changed everyday life. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · The cue card

  • what the invention is
  • what it does
  • how it has changed daily life
  • and explain why you think it is so important

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The invention I'd like to talk about is the smartphone, which, although we now take it completely for granted, I honestly think is one of the most transformative devices ever created.

At its core, it's a pocket-sized computer that happens to make calls. It puts the entire internet in your hand, so with a few taps you can send a message across the world, look up virtually any piece of information, pay for your shopping, navigate an unfamiliar city, or watch a film on the train. Essentially, it has rolled a dozen separate gadgets — a camera, a map, a wallet, a music player — into a single device that fits in your pocket.

The way it has reshaped daily life is genuinely staggering. A generation ago, getting lost meant stopping to ask a stranger; now we simply glance at a map. It's completely changed how we work, shop and stay in touch, and it's given people in remote or poorer regions access to banking and education they could never have reached before. That's precisely why I regard it as so important — for all its downsides, like the way it can be addictive, it has democratised information and opportunity on an unprecedented scale, and there's really no going back.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer works logically through the cue card — what it is, what it does, how it changed life, why it matters — with clear signposts ("At its core...", "The way it has reshaped daily life...", "That's precisely why...") and sustains a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Vocabulary is precise and idiomatic — "take it for granted", "transformative", "pocket-sized", "rolled a dozen gadgets into one", "democratised information", "on an unprecedented scale" — carrying an abstract point about impact with real range.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: a concessive relative clause ("which, although we now take it for granted, I think is one of the most transformative..."), a present perfect for change over time ("it has reshaped daily life"), and a modal-in-the-past structure ("education they could never have reached before"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the enthusiastic content invites lively intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

04 · Useful phrases for this topic

Tap a phrase to see what it means and how to use it. Natural phrases like these lift your Lexical Resource score.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does the invention have to be modern or high-tech?

No. The wheel, printing, antibiotics or electricity all make excellent answers. Choose whatever you can describe clearly and develop a strong "why it matters" for — that reasoning carries the marks, not the invention itself.

How do I fill two minutes on an invention?

Explain what it is and what it does, then spend most of your time on how it changed everyday life and why it is important. A concrete "before and after" contrast, like this answer's map example, fills the time naturally.

Should I mention any downsides?

A brief, balanced nod — like "for all its downsides, such as being addictive" — actually strengthens the answer, showing you can evaluate rather than just praise. Keep it short so the focus stays on the invention's importance.

What tense should I use?

Mostly present and present perfect ("it puts the internet in your hand", "it has reshaped daily life"), with a past contrast for the "before" ("a generation ago, getting lost meant..."). This mix showcases grammatical range.
