IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Book You Enjoyed (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a book you enjoyed and to explain why. A band-9 answer gives a clear sense of what the book is about and lands one developed reason it stayed with you, rather than just summarising the plot. Below is a model long-turn of about 235 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The book I'd like to talk about is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. It's a short but powerful book — part memoir, part psychology — and it's one I keep coming back to. A friend recommended it to me a couple of years ago, at a point when I was feeling pretty burned out with work, and it turned out to be exactly what I needed to read.

The first half is Frankl's account of surviving the concentration camps during the Second World War, which is harrowing but never self-pitying. The second half sets out the idea that grew out of that experience: that we can't always control what happens to us, but we can always choose how we respond, and that finding meaning in life is what keeps people going even in the worst circumstances.

What I enjoyed most — although 'enjoyed' feels like the wrong word for such a serious book — was how much it shifted my perspective. It's the kind of book that quietly stays with you and changes how you look at your own problems, which suddenly seem a lot smaller. I've since recommended it to half a dozen people, and I still find myself quoting a line or two from it whenever a friend is going through a rough patch.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer moves cleanly from what the book is, to what it's about, to why it mattered, with natural linking ("The first half...", "The second half...", "What I enjoyed most, though..."). The self-correction ("although 'enjoyed' feels like the wrong word") is a fluent, natural touch, not hesitation.

Lexical Resource

Precise, idiomatic vocabulary — "keep coming back to", "burned out", "harrowing but never self-pitying", "shifted my perspective", "going through a rough patch" — carries real meaning, and the book's theme is summarised in the speaker's own words rather than a memorised blurb.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: a reduced relative ("a point when I was feeling burned out"), a balanced structure ("we can't always control what happens... but we can always choose how we respond"), and a present perfect ("I've since recommended it to half a dozen people"). No error interrupts the flow.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases, and the contrast structures ("harrowing but never self-pitying") invite natural emphasis, so the recording lands clear sentence stress and intonation without sounding rushed.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Do I need to summarise the whole plot?

No — a brief sense of what it's about is enough. The examiner is far more interested in your language and your personal reaction than in a detailed plot summary. Spend most of your time on why it mattered to you.

Can I talk about a non-fiction book?

Absolutely. Any book counts — a novel, a memoir, a self-help book. What matters is that you can talk about it for two minutes with genuine detail and a clear reason for enjoying it, which is often easier with a book that actually affected you.

What if I don't read much?

Choose any book you've read, even one from school or one everyone knows. You don't need to be a keen reader; you need one book you can describe and react to. A film adaptation you've seen can even help you remember the story.

How do I make the "why I enjoyed it" part strong?

Go beyond "it was interesting". Name the specific effect it had — it "shifted my perspective", "stayed with me", "made my own problems seem smaller". A developed, personal reason is exactly what lifts this answer to band 9.
