IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Restaurant You Like (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a restaurant you like and to explain why you enjoy it. A band-9 answer brings the place to life with specific detail and lands one clear, developed reason it appeals to you, rather than just saying the food is good. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · The cue card

  • what kind of restaurant it is
  • where it is
  • what you usually eat there
  • and explain why you like it so much

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The restaurant I'd like to talk about is a tiny, family-run Vietnamese place tucked down a side street not far from where I live. It's the sort of spot you'd walk straight past if you didn't know it was there — no fancy sign, just a handful of plastic tables — but it's easily my favourite place to eat in the whole city.

It specialises in home-style cooking, the kind of food a Vietnamese grandmother would make, and everything is cooked fresh to order. I nearly always get the same thing — a steaming bowl of bún bò Huế, a spicy beef noodle soup — because I've genuinely never found a better version anywhere. The owner knows me by now and usually brings me an extra bit of chilli without asking.

The reason I love it so much isn't really the food, though, as good as it is. It's the atmosphere and the sense of being a regular somewhere. It feels completely unpretentious and warm — you're treated like family rather than a customer. In a city that's changing so fast, with flashy new places opening all the time, there's something really comforting about a little restaurant that just does one thing brilliantly and never changes.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer covers each cue-card point — the kind of place, where it is, what you eat, and why — with natural linking ("It specialises in...", "The reason I love it so much isn't really the food, though..."). It builds to a warm, reflective point and sustains a full two-minute turn.

Lexical Resource

Vivid, precise vocabulary — "tucked down a side street", "cooked fresh to order", "being a regular", "unpretentious", "does one thing brilliantly" — paints a clear picture, and the appeal is expressed idiomatically rather than with flat words like "the food is nice".

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: a relative clause ("a place tucked down a side street not far from where I live"), a second conditional ("the sort of spot you'd walk straight past if you didn't know"), and a cleft ("The reason I love it... isn't the food; it's the atmosphere"). No error interrupts the flow.

Pronunciation

Sentences are chunked into speakable breath groups and the descriptive phrases invite natural rhythm and stress, giving the recording clear, well-paced intonation without hard consonant clusters that trip the tongue.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does the restaurant have to be fancy or famous?

Not at all — a small, humble place you genuinely love often makes a better answer, because you can describe it with real warmth and specific detail. Sincerity and detail matter far more than how impressive the restaurant is.

How do I fill two minutes describing a restaurant?

Describe the place and what you eat with specific detail, then spend real time on why you love it — the atmosphere, the people, the feeling. The personal "why" fills the time far better than just praising the food.

Should I name specific dishes?

Yes — naming a real dish ("bún bò Huế, a spicy beef noodle soup") gives you concrete, believable detail that flows naturally and shows range. Add a brief description so the examiner can picture it.

How do I make the "why I like it" part strong?

Go beyond the food. This answer lands on the atmosphere and the feeling of being a regular, which is a far more developed, band-9 reason than "the food tastes great".
