IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Useful Skill You Learned (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a useful skill you learned and to explain why it has been valuable. A band-9 answer tells the story of learning it — how, from whom — and lands one clear reason it has proved useful, rather than just naming the skill. Below is a model long-turn of about 235 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

  • what the skill is
  • how and when you learned it
  • who taught you or how you picked it up
  • and explain why it has been useful

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The skill I'd like to talk about is touch-typing — being able to type quickly without looking at the keyboard. It sounds a bit unglamorous, but honestly it's one of the most useful things I've ever taught myself, and I use it every single day.

I picked it up in my last year of university, mostly out of frustration. I was hunting and pecking at the keys, glancing down constantly, and it was slowing me down terribly when I had essays to write. So I found a free website that drilled you with little typing exercises, and I forced myself to practise for twenty minutes a day for about a month. Nobody taught me — it was pure repetition, and for the first week or two I was actually slower than before, which was frustrating.

But it eventually clicked, and the payoff has been enormous. Now that I run a business and spend most of my day at a computer, being able to get my thoughts down as fast as I can think them is a genuine advantage — it saves me hours every week. It's a perfect example of how a bit of boring, deliberate practice early on can pay dividends for the rest of your life.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer tells the learning story in order — what, how, and why it matters — with natural narrative linking ("I picked it up...", "But it eventually clicked...", "Now that I run a business..."). It builds to a clear point and sustains a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Precise, idiomatic vocabulary — "hunting and pecking", "it eventually clicked", "the payoff has been enormous", "pay dividends", "deliberate practice" — carries the story, and the self-deprecating touch ("a bit unglamorous") reads as natural, confident speech.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Structures vary and stay accurate: past continuous for background ("I was hunting and pecking at the keys"), a relative clause ("a free website that drilled you"), and a comparative-of-effort structure ("as fast as I can think them"). Narrative tenses stay consistent throughout.

Pronunciation

Sentences break into speakable thought groups with natural stress on the content words, and the story rhythm invites clear, well-paced intonation — no tongue-twisting clusters to disrupt the delivery.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does the skill have to be impressive?

Not at all — an everyday skill often works better. Something practical like cooking, driving, typing or riding a bike gives you concrete detail about learning it, which scores higher than a grand-sounding skill you can't describe in detail.

How do I fill two minutes on a skill?

Tell it as a short story: what the skill is, then how you learned it with one or two specific moments (the struggle, the breakthrough), and finish with why it's been useful. The learning process is what fills the time naturally.

What tense should I use?

Mostly past simple and past continuous for how you learned it ("I was hunting and pecking", "I forced myself to practise"), and present simple when you explain why it's useful now ("it saves me hours every week"). Mixing them accurately lifts the grammar score.

How do I make the "why it's useful" part strong?

Give a concrete, personal benefit rather than a vague one. "It saves me hours every week" or "it's a genuine advantage at work" is far stronger than "it's very useful". A developed reason is what earns band 9.
