IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Future Plan (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a plan you have for the future and to explain why it matters to you. A band-9 answer sets out the plan clearly, explains how you intend to achieve it, and develops one genuine reason it is important — naturally showcasing a range of future forms. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

  • what the plan is
  • when you hope to achieve it
  • how you intend to make it happen
  • and explain why it is important to you

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The plan I'd like to talk about is a fairly ambitious one — I'm hoping to take a year out to travel and volunteer across South-East Asia, ideally within the next couple of years.

The idea is to spend a few months teaching English in rural schools and helping with community projects, rather than just ticking off tourist sights. In terms of how I'm going to make it happen, I've already started putting a bit of money aside each month, and I'm gradually researching reputable volunteer organisations so I don't end up somewhere that does more harm than good. Once I've saved enough and lined up a placement, I'll hand in my notice and go.

The reason it means so much to me is twofold. On a personal level, I think being thrown into completely unfamiliar situations is the fastest way to grow, and I'd come back far more independent and open-minded. But more importantly, I really want to give something back and feel that I've made even a small, tangible difference to people's lives, rather than just chasing my own career. If it all comes together, I honestly think it could end up being one of the most rewarding things I ever do.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer covers every cue-card point — what, when, how, and why — with natural linking ("The idea is to...", "In terms of how I'm going to make it happen...", "The reason it means so much to me...") and builds to a hopeful close, sustaining a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Vocabulary is precise and idiomatic — "take a year out", "put money aside", "does more harm than good", "hand in my notice", "give something back", "make a tangible difference" — the natural phrasing a confident speaker reaches for rather than flat words.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A rich range of future forms is used accurately — "I'm hoping to take a year out", "how I'm going to make it happen", "Once I've saved enough..., I'll hand in my notice", "I'd come back far more independent", and a first conditional ("If it all comes together, I think it could end up being..."). This is exactly the grammar a future-plan topic invites.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the aspirational content invites genuine intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does the plan have to be realistic or already decided?

It just needs to sound genuine. A plan you are seriously considering gives you the most to say. It does not have to be finalised — describing your intentions and reasons is exactly what the task wants.

Which grammar should I show off here?

Future forms — "I'm going to", "I'm hoping to", "I'll... once I've...", and a conditional like "if it comes together, I could...". A future-plan topic is the perfect place to display a range of future structures accurately.

How do I make the "why it's important" part strong?

Give a specific, personal reason rather than "it would be nice". This answer ties the plan to personal growth and a wish to give something back, which is a far more developed, band-9 reason.

How do I fill two minutes on a future plan?

Describe the plan, say when you hope to do it and how you will make it happen — the concrete steps — then spend the most time on why it matters. The steps and your motivation fill the time naturally.
