過去完了形（past perfect）は「had ＋ 過去分詞」で表し、過去のある時点よりも「さらに前」に完了していた動作を示します。過去の2つの出来事の前後関係を明確にするための時制です。TOEIC Part 5・6 では before・after・by the time とともに出題され、過去形との使い分けが問われます。
基本形は「主語 ＋ had ＋ 過去分詞」で、主語に関わらず had を使います。否定は had not（hadn't）、疑問文は had を主語の前に出します。
had はすべての人称で共通なので、had の直後には必ず過去分詞（done, written, finished）が入ります。Part 5 で分かりやすいポイントです。
By the time the meeting started, the manager had prepared the budget report.
会議が始まるまでに、部長は予算報告書を準備し終えていました。
Before I joined the company, I had completed a similar project.
入社する前に、私は似たようなプロジェクトを完了していました。
過去完了形は before・after・by the time・already・when とともによく使われます。前後関係のルール：先に起きた動作は過去完了形（had ＋ 過去分詞）、後に起きた動作は過去形を使います。
例：When I arrived, the meeting had already started（私が着く前に会議は始まっていた）。2つの過去の出来事があり、一方が明らかに先の場合、そちらを had ＋ 過去分詞にします。
The manager was pleased that the employees had submitted their reports on time.
部長は従業員が報告書を期限内に提出していたことに満足しました。
過去のある時点よりもさらに前に完了していた動作を表すときに使います。過去の2つの出来事の前後関係を示すもので、before, after, by the time とともによく使われます。
2つの過去の動作のうち、先に起きた方を過去完了形（had ＋ 過去分詞）、後に起きた方を過去形にします。例：The meeting had started when I arrived。
「主語 ＋ had ＋ 過去分詞」で、すべての人称で had を使います。否定は had not、疑問文は had を文頭に出します。
「by the time」が過去を表すとき、主節は過去完了形になることが多いです。例：By the time she arrived, we had finished the report。
