接続詞（conjunction）は and・but・so・because・although・while などの語で、語・句・節をつなぎます。2つの部分の論理関係（追加・対比・原因・結果）によって使い分けます。TOEIC Part 5・6 では接続詞の選択と、接続詞と前置詞の区別が頻出します。意味だけでなく、後ろに続く形の違いを押さえることが重要です。
接続詞の3つのグループ
等位接続詞（対等につなぐ）：and（追加）, but（対比）, or（選択）, so（結果）, yet（しかし）, for（というのは）。相関接続詞（ペアで使う）：both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also。従属接続詞（従属節を導く）：because, although, while, when, if, since, unless。

接続詞と前置詞の区別
これは TOEIC の定番のひっかけです。従属接続詞の後ろには「節（主語＋動詞）」が続きます（because the report was late, although we tried）。前置詞の後ろには「名詞・名詞句」が続きます（because of the delay, despite our efforts）。
混同しやすいペア：because（接続詞）/ because of（前置詞）、although（接続詞）/ despite・in spite of（前置詞）、while（接続詞）/ during（前置詞）。空所の後ろが節か名詞かで判断しましょう。

よくある間違い
- ✗名詞の前に接続詞を使ってしまう（because the delay ではなく because of the delay）。
- ✗節の前に前置詞を使ってしまう（despite we tried ではなく although we tried）。
- ✗接続詞を2つ重ねて使ってしまう（Although..., but... は誤り。英語では片方だけ）。
- ✗相関接続詞（neither...nor など）で動詞の一致を間違える（近い方の主語に合わせる）。
よくある質問
接続詞にはどんな種類がありますか？
等位接続詞（and, but, or, so）、ペアで使う相関接続詞（both...and, either...or）、従属節を導く従属接続詞（because, although, when, if）の3種類があります。
接続詞と前置詞はどう区別しますか？
接続詞の後ろには節（主語＋動詞）が続き（because it rained）、前置詞の後ろには名詞句が続きます（because of the rain）。TOEIC で頻出の判断ポイントです。
although と despite の違いは何ですか？
although は接続詞で後ろに節が続きます（although we tried）。despite / in spite of は前置詞で後ろに名詞が続きます（despite our efforts）。意味は同じですが文法が異なります。
なぜ「Although..., but...」を一緒に使えないのですか？
英語では1つの論理関係に接続詞は1つだけ使います。「Although it was late, we finished」が正しく、but を加えるのは誤りです。日本語の「〜だが…しかし」の影響でよくある間違いです。
