IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe an Object You Value (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a possession you value or that is important to you, and to explain why. A band-9 answer describes the object vividly and lands one clear, developed reason for its value — usually sentimental rather than monetary. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · The cue card

  • what the object is
  • how you got it
  • how long you have had it
  • and explain why it is so important to you

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The object I'd like to talk about is an old wristwatch that belonged to my grandfather. It's nothing fancy — a simple, slightly worn mechanical watch — but it's easily one of my most treasured possessions.

I inherited it when my grandfather passed away, about six years ago. He'd worn it every single day for as long as I could remember, so it feels completely bound up with him. It still keeps perfect time, which I love, and I have to wind it by hand every morning — a little daily ritual that I've come to really enjoy. I've had it on my wrist almost every day since, and I get a small pang whenever I have to take it off.

The reason it means so much to me has nothing to do with what it's worth, which is probably very little. It's that it's a physical link to a man I admired enormously and still miss. He was calm, hard-working and endlessly patient, and wearing his watch feels like carrying a bit of him with me and a reminder to try to live up to his example. In a throwaway world, having something with that kind of history feels genuinely precious.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer covers each cue-card point — what, how, how long, and why — with natural linking ("I inherited it when...", "The reason it means so much to me..."). It builds to a warm, reflective conclusion and sustains a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Precise, idiomatic vocabulary — "nothing fancy", "treasured possessions", "bound up with him", "a small pang", "live up to his example", "a throwaway world" — and the sentimental value is expressed with real feeling rather than flat words like "very special".

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: past perfect for background ("He'd worn it every single day"), a relative clause ("a man I admired enormously"), and a cleft ("The reason it means so much to me has nothing to do with what it's worth"). Tenses stay consistent.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the tender content invites genuine intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Should the object be valuable or expensive?

No — a sentimental object almost always makes a better answer than an expensive one. A cheap watch with a family story gives you a rich, personal "why", which is far stronger than describing something merely worth a lot of money.

How do I fill two minutes describing an object?

Describe it briefly, cover how and when you got it, then spend most of your time on why it matters — the story and feelings behind it. The sentimental "why" is what naturally fills the time.

What tense should I use?

A mix: past for how you got it ("I inherited it"), past perfect for background ("he'd worn it every day"), and present for its meaning now ("it means so much to me"). Accurate mixing lifts the grammar score.

How do I make the "why it's important" part strong?

Give a specific, personal reason rather than "I just like it". This answer ties the watch to a beloved grandfather and a daily reminder to live up to him — a developed, emotional reason that reaches band 9.
