IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Memorable Journey (Band 9 Sample)

This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a memorable journey and to explain why it stays with you. A band-9 answer tells the story of the trip vividly, makes clear where you went and who with, and lands one genuine reason it was special. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

02 · Band 9 sample answer

The journey I'd like to talk about is an overnight train trip I took through the mountains a few years ago, which turned out to be far more memorable than the destination itself.

I was travelling with two close friends, and rather than fly, we deliberately chose to take a sleeper train that wound its way up through the countryside over about twelve hours. To be honest, it started off pretty chaotically — we nearly missed it, and our tiny cabin was cramped and a bit shabby. But once we got going, it completely won us over.

The reason it was so memorable really comes down to the experience of the journey rather than getting anywhere. We spent the evening playing cards and chatting for hours as the landscape rolled past the window, and I'll never forget waking up at dawn to find the train snaking alongside a river with snow-capped peaks on either side — it was absolutely breathtaking. There was something wonderfully old-fashioned about being unplugged, with no signal and nothing to do but talk and take it all in. It genuinely taught me that sometimes the journey really is the destination, and I've sought out slow travel like that ever since.

03 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

The answer narrates the journey in a clear order — setting off, the trip itself, then why it mattered — with natural linking ("I was travelling with...", "But once we got going...", "The reason it was so memorable...") and builds to a reflective close, sustaining a full two-minute turn without stalling.

Lexical Resource

Vocabulary is vivid and idiomatic — "wound its way up", "won us over", "rolled past the window", "snaking alongside a river", "snow-capped peaks", "being unplugged", "take it all in" — painting the journey far beyond a flat "it was a nice trip".

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

A wide range is controlled accurately: a non-defining relative clause ("which turned out to be far more memorable than the destination"), a past continuous for background ("I was travelling with two close friends"), and an "as" clause for simultaneous action ("as the landscape rolled past the window"). Tenses stay consistent.

Pronunciation

The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the evocative content invites expressive intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

05 · Frequently asked questions

Does the journey have to be long or exotic?

No — a short local trip can work beautifully if something about it was memorable. The examiner cares about how vividly you describe it and your reason, not the distance or the destination.

How do I fill two minutes describing a journey?

Tell it as a little story — where you set off, who with, how you travelled, what happened along the way — then spend the most time on why it stays with you. The narrative and your feelings fill the time naturally.

What tense should I use?

Mainly the past for the story ("we chose to take a sleeper train", "I was travelling with friends"), shifting to the present for its lasting effect ("I've sought out slow travel ever since"). Accurate mixing lifts the grammar score.

Should I focus on the journey or the destination?

On the journey — that is what the cue card asks about. This answer deliberately makes the train ride itself the memorable part, which gives you far more to describe than simply arriving somewhere.
