IELTS Speaking Part 2: Describe a Gift You Received (Band 9 Sample)
This Part 2 cue card asks you to describe a special gift you received and to explain why it meant so much. A band-9 answer describes the gift and its story vividly and lands one clear, developed reason for its value — usually thoughtfulness rather than cost. Below is a model long-turn of about 230 words in a natural spoken register, followed by a breakdown of why it earns a 9 on all four speaking criteria and the collocations worth stealing.

The gift I'd like to talk about is a handmade photo album that my closest friends put together for my thirtieth birthday a couple of years ago. It's not something you could buy in a shop, which is exactly what makes it so precious to me.
A group of about six of them secretly worked on it for weeks, apparently. They'd gathered photos from right across my life — childhood snaps, university nights out, holidays, silly candid moments — and next to each one they'd written a little note or memory. They gave it to me at a surprise dinner, and I have to admit I got quite emotional flicking through it in front of everyone.
The reason it was so special has nothing to do with money. It's that it represented years of friendship in physical form, and the sheer amount of thought and effort that had gone into it was overwhelming. In an age when we take a thousand photos and never look at them again, having someone lovingly curate the story of your life is an incredibly moving thing. I still get it out every now and then when I'm feeling nostalgic, and it never fails to put a huge smile on my face.
03 · Why this scores Band 9
The answer covers each cue-card point — what, who, when, and why — with natural linking ("A group of about six of them secretly worked on it...", "The reason it was so special..."). It builds to a warm, reflective point and sustains a full two-minute turn without stalling.
Precise, idiomatic vocabulary — "handmade", "candid moments", "flicking through it", "in physical form", "lovingly curate", "feeling nostalgic" — and the sentimental value is expressed with genuine feeling rather than flat words like "very nice".
A wide range is controlled accurately: past perfect for background ("They'd gathered photos... and written a little note"), a relative clause ("which is exactly what makes it so precious"), and a gerund subject ("having someone lovingly curate the story of your life is... moving"). Tenses stay consistent.
The script is built from speakable, stress-timed phrases with natural chunking, and the tender content invites genuine intonation, so the recording lands clear sentence stress without tongue-twisting clusters.

05 · Frequently asked questions
Should the gift be expensive?
No — a thoughtful, inexpensive gift almost always makes a better answer than a costly one, because you can develop a rich "why". A handmade or sentimental item gives you a far stronger, more personal reason than something merely valuable.
How do I fill two minutes describing a gift?
Describe the gift and its story — who made or gave it, and when — then spend most of your time on why it meant so much. The story behind the gift and your feelings naturally fill the time.
What tense should I use?
A mix: past for receiving it ("they gave it to me"), past perfect for the preparation ("they'd gathered photos"), and present for its meaning now ("I still get it out"). Accurate mixing lifts the grammar score.
How do I make the "why it was special" part strong?
Give a specific, personal reason rather than "I liked it". This answer ties the album to years of friendship and the thought behind it, which is a far more developed, band-9 reason than its value.
