IELTS Speaking Part 1: Hometown & Hobbies (Band 9 Sample Answers)

IELTS Speaking Part 1 is a short, friendly warm-up about familiar topics like your hometown and hobbies. A band-9 answer doesn't just give a one-line reply — it adds a reason, an example or a small personal detail, then stops naturally. Below are five common questions with band-9 model answers in a relaxed spoken register, plus a breakdown of why they score 9 and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · Questions & Band 9 answers

Q: Where is your hometown?

I'm from Đà Nẵng, a coastal city in central Vietnam. It's known for its long sandy beaches and the Marble Mountains just outside the city. I'd say it's the perfect size — big enough to have everything you need, but far more relaxed than somewhere like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

answer, then extend with detail

Q: What do you like most about your hometown?

Definitely the beach. Being able to go for a swim after work, or just grab a coffee looking out over the sea, is something I really don't take for granted. The food's fantastic too — Đà Nẵng has a few dishes you can't get quite the same anywhere else.

give one clear reason

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

It varies, but most evenings I try to unwind with a bit of reading or by playing the guitar. At weekends I'm a lot more active — I'll go hiking or meet friends for a coffee. I find it's important to have a mix of quiet time and being social.

contrast two habits

Q: Have you had any hobbies since you were a child?

Yes, quite a few. I've been into football for as long as I can remember — I used to play every day after school. Some hobbies have come and gone over the years, but that one has really stuck with me, and I still play five-a-side most weeks.

use past and present together

Q: Do you prefer indoor or outdoor activities?

Honestly, a bit of both, though I lean towards outdoor ones. There's something about being out in the fresh air — hiking or cycling — that clears my head far better than anything indoors. That said, on a rainy day I'm perfectly happy curling up with a good book.

take a side, then concede

02 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

Each answer is extended with a reason or example ('big enough to have everything you need, but far more relaxed...') and then stops cleanly — no rambling. Natural signposts ('I'd say', 'Honestly', 'That said') keep the delivery relaxed and connected rather than rehearsed.

Lexical Resource

Topic vocabulary is precise and idiomatic — 'take for granted', 'unwind', 'clears my head', 'come and gone' — and it's used casually, the way a confident speaker actually talks, not as showpiece words dropped into a warm-up.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Even in short answers there's a good range: a comparative ('far more relaxed than somewhere like Hanoi'), a present perfect ('I've been into football for as long as I can remember'), and a concessive ('That said, on a rainy day...'). All accurate, none forced.

Pronunciation

The answers are built from short, speakable chunks with natural stress on the key words, so they invite the light, chatty intonation Part 1 rewards — easy to deliver without stumbling.

04 · Frequently asked questions

How long should a Part 1 answer be?

Two or three sentences is ideal — enough to answer and add a reason or example, then stop. One word is too short and a two-minute speech is too long; Part 1 is a quick, natural exchange.

Is it okay to give short answers in Part 1?

You can start short, but always extend a little. 'Yes' on its own scores badly; 'Yes, I love football — I've played it since I was a kid' shows the examiner your range in a natural way.

Can I talk about my real hometown and hobbies?

Yes, and you should. Real details ('the Marble Mountains just outside the city') come out far more fluently than something invented, and Part 1 is deliberately about your own life.

What if I don't have an interesting hobby?

It doesn't need to be interesting — it needs to be talked about well. Even 'I mostly watch films to relax' scores highly if you add why and give an example. Delivery matters more than the activity.
