IELTS Speaking Part 1: Daily Routine (Band 9 Sample Answers)

This IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic asks about your daily routine — a familiar area you can talk about naturally. A band-9 answer gives a clear reply and extends it with a detail, a reason or a small contrast, then stops cleanly. Below are five common daily-routine questions with band-9 model answers in a relaxed spoken register, plus why they score 9 and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · Questions & Band 9 answers

Q: Can you describe a typical day for you?

Sure. I'm usually up by seven, and I like to ease into the day with a coffee before I check any messages. Mornings are when I do my most focused work, so I try to protect that time; the afternoons tend to be more about meetings and admin. In the evening I switch off completely — a bit of exercise, dinner, and then I unwind with a book.

walk through the day, add a reason

Q: Which part of the day do you enjoy most?

Early morning, without a doubt. There's something about that first hour, before the world wakes up, when it's quiet and my mind is fresh — I get more done then than in the whole rest of the day. I've become a bit of a morning person, which my younger self would find hard to believe.

pick one, justify with contrast

Q: Has your routine changed compared to a few years ago?

Quite a lot, actually. When I was a student my days were all over the place — I'd stay up late and sleep in whenever I could. Now that I run my own business, I've had to become far more disciplined, because if I don't structure my day, nothing gets done. On the whole it's a change for the better.

contrast past and present

Q: Do you think it is important to have a daily routine?

I do, up to a point. A routine takes the effort out of decisions — you're not wasting willpower deciding when to work or exercise, it just happens. That said, I don't think you should be a slave to it; the best routines have a bit of flexibility built in, so a change of plan doesn't throw your whole day off.

take a stance, then qualify it

Q: Is there anything about your routine you would like to change?

If I'm honest, I'd love to build in more time for exercise. It's always the first thing I drop when I'm busy, even though I know it makes me feel far better. So my goal this year is to treat it like a fixed appointment rather than something I fit in if there's time left over.

02 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

Each answer opens directly, adds a reason or a small story, then stops — no rambling. Casual signposts ("without a doubt", "that said", "if I'm honest") give the relaxed, connected flow of someone genuinely talking about their day.

Lexical Resource

Everyday vocabulary is idiomatic and precise — "ease into the day", "switch off", "a slave to it", "willpower", "throw your whole day off" — used naturally rather than as showpiece words in a warm-up.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Even short answers vary structure well: a present habit ("I'm usually up by seven"), a past-vs-present contrast ("When I was a student... Now that I run my own business"), and a conditional ("if I don't structure my day, nothing gets done"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

The answers break into short, speakable chunks with natural stress on the key words, inviting the light, chatty intonation Part 1 rewards — easy to deliver without stumbling.

03 · Useful phrases for this topic

Tap a phrase to see what it means and how to use it. Natural phrases like these lift your Lexical Resource score.

04 · Frequently asked questions

How long should a Part 1 answer be?

Two or three sentences is ideal — enough to answer and add a reason or detail, then stop. One word is too short and a long speech is too much; Part 1 is a quick, natural exchange.

Can I use present simple for routines?

Yes — routines are exactly what the present simple is for ("I get up at seven", "I usually work in the mornings"). Mixing in a past contrast ("When I was a student...") shows more range and lifts the grammar score.

What if my routine is boring?

It doesn't need to be exciting — it needs to be talked about well. Even an ordinary day scores highly if you add why you do things and how you feel about them. Delivery matters more than the routine itself.

Should I memorise a script for this common topic?

No — memorised answers sound flat and examiners can tell. Learn a few useful phrases instead ("ease into the day", "switch off") and speak spontaneously so it flows naturally.
