IELTS Speaking Part 1: Clothes & Fashion (Band 9 Sample Answers)

This IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic asks about clothes and fashion — an easy, familiar area to speak about naturally. A band-9 answer gives a clear reply and rounds it out with a preference, a reason or a small detail, then stops cleanly. Below are five common questions with band-9 model answers in a relaxed spoken register, plus why they score 9 and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · Questions & Band 9 answers

Q: What kind of clothes do you usually wear?

I'd describe my style as fairly casual and low-key — jeans, a T-shirt and comfortable trainers most days. Since I work for myself and don't have to dress up for an office, comfort is my main priority. I do own a couple of smarter outfits for special occasions, but honestly, given the choice, I'll always reach for something relaxed.

describe your style, add a reason

Q: Are you interested in fashion?

Not hugely, to be honest. I like to look presentable and I appreciate a well-made piece of clothing, but I don't really follow the latest trends or read fashion magazines. I tend to buy things that are simple and last for years, rather than chasing whatever happens to be in style this season.

honest answer, then a contrast

Q: Do you prefer comfortable clothes or fashionable clothes?

Comfort wins every time for me. I find it hard to enjoy myself if I'm fidgeting with something tight or fussy, so I'd take a soft, well-fitting jumper over a trendy but uncomfortable jacket any day. That said, I don't think the two have to be mutually exclusive — the best clothes manage to be both.

take a side, then nuance it

Q: Have your clothing tastes changed over the years?

Quite a lot, actually. As a teenager I was far more concerned with looking cool and fitting in, so I'd wear whatever was fashionable even if I didn't really like it. As I've got older, I've settled into my own style and care a lot less about what other people think. I'd say I dress for myself now rather than for anyone else.

contrast then and now

Q: Do people in your country care about fashion?

A lot of people do, particularly in the big cities and among younger generations. There's definitely a growing interest in brands and looking stylish, partly driven by social media. But it varies enormously — plenty of people, especially in smaller towns, are far more practical and dress simply for everyday life rather than to make a statement.

generalise, then qualify

02 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

Each answer commits to a clear line and develops it with a reason or contrast, then stops. Relaxed signposts ("to be honest", "that said", "actually") link the ideas naturally, so the delivery never stalls or rambles.

Lexical Resource

Clothing vocabulary is idiomatic and precise — "casual and low-key", "dress up", "follow the latest trends", "well-fitting", "make a statement" — used casually the way a confident speaker actually talks.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Structures vary well: a causal "since" clause ("Since I work for myself... comfort is my main priority"), a comparative ("a soft jumper over a trendy but uncomfortable jacket"), and a past-vs-present contrast ("As I've got older, I've settled into my own style"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

Short, speakable chunks with natural stress on the key words invite the easy, chatty intonation Part 1 rewards, with no tongue-twisting clusters to disrupt the flow.

03 · Useful phrases for this topic

Tap a phrase to see what it means and how to use it. Natural phrases like these lift your Lexical Resource score.

04 · Frequently asked questions

What if I'm not interested in fashion at all?

That is a perfectly good answer — just say so and extend it. "I'm not really into fashion; I just wear whatever is comfortable and lasts" plus a reason is exactly the kind of natural, developed response band 9 rewards.

Do I need to know fashion vocabulary or brand names?

No. Part 1 tests natural conversation, not fashion expertise. Everyday phrases like "casual", "dress up" and "follow trends" score better than designer names or technical terms you might use awkwardly.

How do I extend a short answer about clothes?

Add a preference, a reason or how your taste has changed. "I wear casual clothes" becomes band-9 as "I usually dress casually because comfort matters more to me than looking trendy." The extension carries the marks.

Can I talk about fashion in my country?

Yes, if the question asks. Give a general view, then qualify it ("a lot of young people care about it, but it varies"). Balanced, specific observations flow more naturally than sweeping generalisations.
