IELTS Speaking Part 1: Flowers & Plants (Band 9 Sample)

This IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic asks about flowers and plants — a light, familiar area that is easy to speak about naturally. A band-9 answer gives a clear reply and rounds it out with a preference, a reason or a small detail, then stops cleanly. Below are five common questions with band-9 model answers in a relaxed spoken register, plus why they score 9 and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · Questions & Band 9 answers

Q: Do you like flowers?

I do, yes — I think they instantly brighten up a room and lift your mood. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about them, but I love having a few fresh flowers on the kitchen table, especially something colourful like tulips in spring. There's just something cheerful about them that a bit of decoration can't quite match.

answer, add a reason and example

Q: Do you have any plants at home?

I've got a fair few, actually — I've become a bit of a plant lover over the last couple of years. Mostly low-maintenance houseplants like succulents and a big cheese plant, because I'll be honest, I don't have the greenest fingers. They make my flat feel much more alive and homely, though, so I keep adding to the collection.

answer, then a self-deprecating aside

Q: Do people in your country often give flowers as gifts?

Yes, it's a really common gesture. People tend to bring flowers for birthdays, to say thank you, or when visiting someone in hospital, and there are florists on almost every high street. That said, certain flowers and colours carry particular meanings, so you do have to be a little careful about what you choose for which occasion.

describe custom, then a caveat

Q: Would you like to learn more about growing plants?

Definitely — it's actually something that's been on my mind. I'd love to get better at gardening and maybe start growing my own herbs and vegetables, partly because it seems so rewarding and partly because home-grown food just tastes better. I think it would be a really relaxing hobby to pick up, so it's high on my list.

answer, give two reasons

Q: Do you prefer wild flowers or garden flowers?

I think I'm drawn more to wild flowers, to be honest. There's something lovely and effortless about a meadow full of them, all growing naturally rather than in neat, manicured rows. Garden flowers can be absolutely stunning, of course, but for me the slightly untamed, natural look has a special charm that a perfectly arranged flowerbed sometimes lacks.

take a side, then a fair concession

02 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

Each answer commits to a clear line and develops it with a reason, an example or a contrast, then stops. Relaxed signposts ("actually", "to be honest", "That said") link the ideas naturally, so the delivery never stalls or rambles.

Lexical Resource

Nature vocabulary is idiomatic and precise — "brighten up a room", "lift your mood", "low-maintenance houseplants", "the greenest fingers", "home-grown", "manicured rows" — used casually the way a confident speaker actually talks.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Structures vary well: a relative clause ("something cheerful that a bit of decoration can't quite match"), a "partly because... and partly because..." reason pair, and a comparative preference ("I'm drawn more to wild flowers... rather than in neat rows"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

Short, speakable chunks with natural stress on the key words invite the easy, chatty intonation Part 1 rewards, with no tongue-twisting clusters to disrupt the flow.

03 · Useful phrases for this topic

Tap a phrase to see what it means and how to use it. Natural phrases like these lift your Lexical Resource score.

04 · Frequently asked questions

How do I extend a short answer about flowers or plants?

Add a preference, a reason or an example. "I like flowers" becomes band-9 as "I love a few fresh tulips on the table because they brighten up the room." The extension carries the marks.

What if I know nothing about plants?

That is fine — you do not need botanical knowledge. Admitting "I don't have green fingers" and talking about how plants make your home feel is natural and developed. Part 1 tests conversation, not gardening expertise.

Do I need the names of specific flowers?

A couple help — "tulips", "succulents", "herbs" — but everyday phrases like "fresh flowers" and "houseplants" score just as well. Do not force in names you are unsure how to pronounce.

How do I answer the "wild or garden flowers" preference?

Pick one and give a reason, then concede the other has merit — as this model does, preferring the "untamed" look of wild flowers while admitting garden flowers can be stunning. A reasoned preference beats "I like both".
