IELTS Speaking Part 1: Sleep (Band 9 Sample)

This IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic asks about sleep and daily rest — a familiar area everyone can talk about naturally. A band-9 answer gives a clear, honest reply and rounds it out with a habit, a reason or a small detail, then stops cleanly. Below are five common questions with band-9 model answers in a relaxed spoken register, plus why they score 9 and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · Questions & Band 9 answers

Q: How many hours do you usually sleep?

I try to get a solid seven or eight hours a night, as that seems to be my sweet spot — any less and I'm groggy and irritable the next day. During the week I'm pretty disciplined about it, though I'll admit I tend to stay up later at weekends and then have a bit of a lie-in.

give a figure, add a detail

Q: Do you like to take naps during the day?

I do, whenever I can get away with it. A short twenty-minute power nap after lunch works wonders for me — I wake up feeling recharged and far more focused for the afternoon. I'm careful not to sleep too long, though, otherwise I feel worse than before and it throws off my sleep that night.

answer, then a qualification

Q: Do you usually sleep well?

Generally, yes, I'm quite a heavy sleeper and I nod off within minutes of my head hitting the pillow. Every now and then, if I've got something on my mind, I'll toss and turn for a while, but on the whole I've got nothing to complain about — I count myself lucky, as I know a lot of people really struggle with it.

mostly yes, then an exception

Q: Has your sleep changed compared to when you were younger?

Quite a bit, actually. As a teenager I could happily sleep in until midday and function on very little during the week, whereas now I'm much more of an early riser and my body clock wakes me up at roughly the same time every day. I think I appreciate a good night's sleep far more than I used to.

contrast then and now

Q: What advice would you give for sleeping well?

The single best thing, in my experience, is to put your phone away well before bed — the screen really does keep your brain wired. Beyond that, I'd say try to stick to a regular routine, going to bed and getting up at similar times, and keep your bedroom cool and dark. Those small habits make a surprising difference.

give practical, developed advice

02 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

Each answer commits to a clear line and develops it with a habit, an exception or a reason, then stops. Relaxed signposts ("to be honest", "on the whole", "Beyond that") link the ideas naturally, so the delivery never stalls or rambles.

Lexical Resource

Sleep vocabulary is idiomatic and precise — "my sweet spot", "have a lie-in", "a power nap", "nod off", "toss and turn", "an early riser", "keep your brain wired" — the kind of phrasing a confident native speaker naturally reaches for.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Structures vary well: a conditional-style contrast ("any less and I'm groggy the next day"), a "whereas" comparison ("whereas now I'm much more of an early riser"), and an infinitive-of-purpose chain in the advice ("try to stick to a regular routine, going to bed and getting up at similar times"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

Short, speakable chunks with natural stress on the key words invite the easy, chatty intonation Part 1 rewards, with no tongue-twisting clusters to disrupt the flow.

04 · Frequently asked questions

How do I extend a short answer about sleep?

Add a habit, an exception or how it affects you. "I sleep about seven hours" becomes band-9 as "I aim for seven or eight, because any less and I'm groggy all day." The extension carries the marks.

What sleep-related idioms are worth using?

Natural phrases like "nod off", "a lie-in", "toss and turn" and "a power nap" sound authentic and boost Lexical Resource, as long as you use them accurately rather than forcing several into one answer.

The "advice for sleeping well" question feels harder — how do I handle it?

Give one or two practical tips and a quick reason. This answer suggests putting the phone away and keeping a routine, then notes those habits "make a surprising difference" — simple, developed and easy to say.

Can I admit that I sleep badly?

Of course — honesty is fine and often gives you more to say. Describe the problem ("I toss and turn when I'm stressed") and what you do about it, and the answer stays natural and well developed.
