IELTS Speaking Part 1: Weather & Seasons (Band 9 Sample Answers)

This IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic asks about weather and seasons — an easy, familiar area to speak about naturally. A band-9 answer gives a clear reply and rounds it out with a preference, a reason or a small detail, then stops cleanly. Below are five common questions with band-9 model answers in a relaxed spoken register, plus why they score 9 and the collocations worth stealing.

01 · Questions & Band 9 answers

Q: What is the weather usually like where you live?

It's tropical, so honestly it's warm pretty much all year round. We don't really have four distinct seasons — instead we have a dry season and a rainy season. During the rainy months you can get these dramatic downpours that come out of nowhere and are over in twenty minutes, which I actually quite like.

describe, add a personal touch

Q: Which season do you like best?

For me it would be autumn — or the closest thing we get to it. The unbearable summer heat finally eases off, the air feels fresh, and it's just the perfect temperature for being outside without melting. If I ever move somewhere with a proper autumn, I think I'd be in my element.

pick one, justify with contrast

Q: Does the weather affect your mood or daily life?

Quite a lot, actually. On a bright, sunny morning I wake up with far more energy and I'm keen to get out and do things. A run of grey, wet days, on the other hand, can make me feel a bit sluggish and want to stay indoors. I don't think I fully appreciated that connection until I paid attention to it.

contrast two conditions

Q: Do you prefer hot weather or cold weather?

I'd lean towards cool weather over hot, without a doubt. When it's really hot and humid I find it hard to concentrate and I just feel drained. Cold weather is much easier to deal with, in my view — you can always put on another layer, whereas in the heat there's only so much you can take off.

take a side, with a witty reason

Q: Has the weather in your country changed over the years?

I do get the sense that it has, yes. The older people in my family often say the seasons used to be more predictable, whereas now the weather seems more extreme — hotter summers, heavier rain. I can't claim to have measured it, but it certainly feels less settled than it did when I was a child.

hedge honestly, give evidence

02 · Why this scores Band 9

Fluency & Coherence

Each answer commits to a clear line and develops it with a reason, a contrast or a small observation, then stops. Relaxed signposts ("honestly", "on the other hand", "without a doubt") keep the delivery natural and connected rather than rehearsed.

Lexical Resource

Weather vocabulary is precise and idiomatic — "all year round", "dramatic downpours", "the heat eases off", "feel drained", "less settled" — used casually the way a fluent speaker actually talks, not as showpiece words.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Structures vary well: a contrast with "whereas" ("you can put on another layer, whereas in the heat..."), a second conditional ("If I ever move somewhere with a proper autumn, I'd be in my element"), and a reported observation ("used to be more predictable"). All accurate.

Pronunciation

Short, speakable chunks with natural stress on the key words invite the easy, chatty intonation Part 1 rewards, with no awkward consonant clusters to trip over.

04 · Frequently asked questions

Is the weather topic really that common in Part 1?

Yes — it's one of the classic warm-up topics because everyone can talk about it. The examiner is not testing your meteorology; they just want natural, extended answers, so treat it as an easy chance to show fluent everyday language.

How do I avoid one-word answers like "It's hot"?

Always add a detail or a reason. "It's hot" becomes band-9 as "It's hot and humid for most of the year, which I find makes it hard to concentrate." The extension is what earns the marks.

Can I talk about seasons my country doesn't really have?

Yes — you can say your country doesn't have four distinct seasons and describe what it does have (a dry and a rainy season, for example). Being honest and specific about your own climate flows far better than inventing seasons.

Should I mention climate change?

Only if the question invites it, as the "has the weather changed" question does. Keep it to a natural, personal observation ("the older people in my family say the seasons used to be more predictable") rather than a mini-lecture.
