冠詞（article）は a・an・the で、名詞の前に置いてそれが「不特定」か「特定」かを示します。日本語に冠詞がないため、日本人学習者が最も苦手とする分野の一つです。TOEIC Part 5・6 では a/an（不特定）と the（特定）の使い分け、そして冠詞を付けない場合が問われます。
不定冠詞 a と an
a / an は「数えられる名詞の単数形」の前で、初めて話題にするときや不特定のものを指すときに使います。子音の「音」で始まる語には a（a report, a meeting）、母音の「音」で始まる語には an（an email, an hour ※h は無音）を使います。
重要：文字ではなく「音」で判断します。a university（発音は /j/）、an MBA（発音は /e/）。

定冠詞 the と、冠詞を付けない場合
the は特定された名詞に使います：すでに話題に出たもの、唯一のもの、話し手と聞き手の両方が分かっているもの（the accounting department, the report we discussed）。
冠詞を付けないのは、複数形・不可算名詞を「一般的な意味」で使うとき（Reports are important）、固有名詞、そして一部の決まり文句（go to work, at home）です。TOEIC では the と無冠詞の使い分けが頻出します。
Please submit the report to the accounting department by Friday.
金曜日までに報告書を経理部に提出してください。
よくある間違い
- ✗a/an を文字で判断してしまう（a hour ではなく an hour、an university ではなく a university）。
- ✗a/an を複数形・不可算名詞に付けてしまう（an information は誤り）。
- ✗特定された名詞に the を付け忘れる、または固有名詞に the を付けてしまう。
- ✗決まり文句で不要な冠詞を付けてしまう（go to the work ではなく go to work）。

a と an はどう使い分けますか？
子音の音で始まる語には a（a report）、母音の音で始まる語には an（an email, an hour）を使います。文字ではなく発音で判断します。
the はいつ使いますか？
特定された名詞に使います：すでに話題に出た、唯一である、または話し手と聞き手の双方が何を指すか分かっているときです（the manager, the report we discussed）。
冠詞を付けないのはどんなときですか？
複数形・不可算名詞を一般的な意味で使うとき（Reports are essential）、固有名詞、一部の決まり文句（go to work, at home, by car）では冠詞を付けません。
なぜ日本人は冠詞が苦手なのですか？
日本語に冠詞がなく、「特定・不特定」の概念が英語と直接対応しないためです。a/an/the のルールを理解し、多くの例文で練習するのが効果的です。
