Introduction
Hi, I'm Duc. Today I want to share a really practical strategy for Part 7 of the TOEIC exam. If you're like me and struggle with reading quickly, don't worry — I've figured out a way to get through the whole section without feeling crushed by the clock.
1. Part 7 Overview
Part 7 has the largest number of questions in the entire TOEIC test: 54 questions in total, with 75 minutes to complete them. The catch is that the reading passages can be very long and packed with information.
2. Smart Time Allocation
2.1. Plan Your Time
I break the 75 minutes into smaller chunks so the section never feels overwhelming:
- Reading and answering questions: 75 minutes total
- First 10 minutes: Skim all the passages to get a general sense of the content.
- Next 50 minutes: Read each passage in detail and answer the questions.
- Final 15 minutes: Go back and tackle any questions you left unanswered.
2.2. Prioritise Questions
Not all questions carry the same difficulty, and recognising that has saved me a lot of time. I follow this order:
- Easy questions first: Start with the questions you feel confident you can answer right away.
- Harder questions later: Once the easy ones are done, circle back to the tougher ones.
3. Effective Reading Techniques
3.1. Skimming
Before diving into the details, I skim the entire passage to get the big picture. I pay attention to:
- Titles and subheadings
- Keywords in bold or italics
- The first and last sentence of each paragraph
3.2. Scanning
Once I have a general overview, I switch to scanning to locate the specific information each question is asking about. I:
- Search for keywords from the question to identify the relevant paragraph.
- Read that paragraph carefully to find the exact information I need.
4. Practice Is the Key
Ultimately, I've found that consistent practice makes the biggest difference. I regularly work through sample tests, and every time I finish one I reflect on what went wrong and adjust my approach for the next attempt.
