1. The Challenges of the TOEIC Reading Section
Many test-takers struggle to manage their time across all 100 questions in the TOEIC Reading section. I've been there myself — running out of time before I could answer everything. That's the last thing anyone wants, right?
The root of the problem is usually how you read and process the material. Without a clear understanding of the test structure and question types, it's easy to get confused and spend far more time than necessary.
2. Understanding the Structure and Content of the Reading Test
The TOEIC Reading section consists of three parts: Part 5 (30 incomplete sentence questions), Part 6 (16 text completion questions), and Part 7 (54 reading comprehension questions). Each part tests you differently, and misunderstanding any one of them can cost you points unnecessarily.
After analyzing each part carefully, here's what I found:
- Part 5 primarily tests grammar and vocabulary. Pay close attention to the context of each sentence.
- Part 6 requires you to understand the flow of a passage in order to fill in the blanks accurately. The best approach is to read the entire passage rather than focusing only on the blanked sentences.
- Part 7 is the largest reading comprehension section and demands the ability to locate information quickly.
Example:
Question 1. The project was completed ahead of schedule, ______ the team's effort.
- (A) because of
- (B) despite
- (C) in addition to
- (D) although
Answer: (A)
