最上級（superlative）は、3つ以上のものの中で「最も〜だ」と述べるときに使います。形容詞・副詞に「-est」を付けるか「most」を前に置くかは語の長さで決まり、通常 the を伴います。TOEIC Part 5 では最上級の正しい形と、the の有無、範囲を示す語が問われます。基本ルールを押さえれば素早く正解できます。
最上級の作り方
短い語（1音節）には the ＋ 形容詞 ＋ -est（the cheapest, the fastest）。長い語（2音節以上）には the most ＋ 形容詞（the most expensive, the most efficient）を使います。
最上級はほぼ必ず the を伴います。不規則変化：good → the best、bad → the worst、far → the farthest/furthest、many/much → the most、little → the least。
Among all candidates, Ms. Lee presented the most comprehensive plan.

This quarter’s sales figures are the highest we’ve seen in the past year.

TOEIC での見分け方
名詞の前の the、そして of all, in the company, among, of the three といった範囲を示す語が最上級の目印です。「the ＋ 空所 ＋ 名詞」で、3つ以上の中での比較なら「-est」か「the most」を選びます。
注意：最上級は3つ以上のときに使い、2つの比較には比較級（than）を使います。対象の数で判断しましょう。

3つの提案の中で、部長はキムさんの計画が最も実用的だと考えました。
よくある間違い
- ✗最上級の前の the を忘れる（most efficient ではなく the most efficient）。
- ✗短い語に the most を使ってしまう（the most cheap ではなく the cheapest）。
- ✗長い語に -est を付けてしまう（expensivest ではなく the most expensive）。
- ✗2つの比較に最上級を使ってしまう（比較級 than を使うべき）。
