How IELTS Listening scoring works
The Listening test has 40 questions, each worth one mark. Your raw score out of 40 is converted to a band from 1 to 9 using a fixed conversion table. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it always pays to attempt every question. The same table is used for Academic and General Training candidates.
Frequently asked questions
How many correct answers do I need for each Listening band?+
Roughly: 39–40 correct is a band 9, 35–36 a band 8, 30–31 a band 7, 23–25 a band 6 and 16–17 a band 5. Cut-offs vary by a mark or two between test versions.
Is the Listening table the same for Academic and General Training?+
Yes. Listening (and Speaking) use the same test and conversion for both modules — only Reading and Writing differ between Academic and General Training.
Is this an official score?+
It is a reliable estimate based on the widely-published conversion table. Only an official IELTS result confirms your band.
