How IELTS overall band scores work

IELTS reports a band from 1.0 to 9.0 for each of the four sections. Your overall band is the average of those four scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Because rounding can nudge you up, a strong section can lift a borderline overall — for example 6.5, 6.5, 5.0, 7.0 averages to 6.25 and rounds up to a 6.5.

Frequently asked questions

How is the overall IELTS band calculated?+

Your overall band is the average of the four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band. A .25 average rounds up to the next half band, and a .75 average rounds up to the next whole band.

Does rounding ever round down?+

Yes. An average that ends in .125 or .375 rounds down to the nearest half band — for example an average of 6.125 becomes 6.0, while 6.25 becomes 6.5.

Is this the official IELTS scoring?+

This calculator uses the same published rounding rule British Council and IDP apply. It is a reliable estimate, but only an official test report shows your certified band.
