The short answer
If you want to pay nothing at all, start with nihongojouzu.jp for timed mocks from N5 to N2, Bunpro's 25 free JLPT tests for more mocks, and Anki or jpdb for free spaced repetition. Toey is further down this list: its free tier is all N5 study content plus one free mock per level, and what it adds is a predicted score on the 180-point scale. Paid plans on most of these apps give much more, but this list ranks only what is free.
How we ranked
We ranked by how much of the app you can use for JLPT prep without paying, today, with no trial clock running. A tool that is free forever ranks above a tool with a free sample. Free mock exams count for a lot, because they are the hardest thing to find for free. Toey publishes this post, so we placed Toey below every tool that gives more for free, and next to GyanMirai, which gives the same number of free mocks.

1. nihongojouzu.jp: fully free mocks and review
nihongojouzu is a free web app you can install on your phone's home screen, and it works offline. It has timed JLPT-style mocks for N5 to N2, full length for N5 and N4, with a breakdown by section. It also has spaced repetition review. There is no premium tier and there are no ads; it runs on tips.
The trade-off: it does not cover N1, and it says plainly that it does not predict a scaled score. You see how you did per section, not a number on the 180-point scale.
2. Bunpro: 25 free JLPT tests, paid grammar SRS
Bunpro is best known for grammar SRS, but since September 2025 it also has 25 JLPT practice tests, five per level, with recorded listening. They are free and do not need an account or an email. Results are scored as a percentage, with a pass at 70% overall and 40% per section, not on the 180-point scale.
The grammar and vocabulary SRS that most people use Bunpro for is paid: $5 a month or $150 lifetime, after a 30-day free trial with no card needed. The free tier gives limited SRS access.
3. Anki and jpdb: free spaced repetition
Anki is a flashcard app with very flexible spaced repetition. The desktop app and AnkiDroid are free, and so are the many shared JLPT decks. Only the iPhone app, AnkiMobile, costs $24.99 once.
jpdb.io is a free web app for vocabulary SRS built from words in real Japanese media. It runs on optional Patreon support.
Neither has mock exams. They are where you build vocabulary and kanji recognition, not where you test yourself on exam format.
5. Renshuu: a generous free tier
Renshuu covers vocabulary, kanji and grammar with JLPT study paths and SRS. Reviews describe its free tier as generous; we did not measure its limits ourselves. Pro costs $6.99 a month or $49.99 to $59.99 a year. We found no mock exams.
6. WaniKani: three free levels
WaniKani teaches kanji and vocabulary reading through mnemonics and SRS. Levels 1 to 3 are free forever, which is enough to see whether the method suits you, but not enough for an exam. After that it costs $9 a month, $89 a year or $299 for lifetime access. There are no mocks and no handwriting practice.
7. GyanMirai: one free mock per level
GyanMirai is a web site with 75 JLPT mocks. The free tier gives one mock per level, with ads and without answer explanations. It also has a separate calculator that turns section scores into a 0–180 total. Pro costs $9 a month or $99 a year.
7. Toey: N5 study content, one free mock per level, a predicted 180 score
Toey is a web app with nothing to install. For free you get:
- all of the N5 study content, including kana and the free SRS review set;
- week 1 of the study plan;
- one full timed mock at each level, N5 to N1, five in total out of 140 papers.
After a mock, Toey shows a predicted score on the 180-point scale. It checks two things, as the real JLPT does: whether your total reaches the pass mark, and whether each section reaches its own minimum. A mock with a passing total and one sunk section is reported as a fail. The score comes from fixed scoring rules, not AI, and it is an estimate, not an official result.
A common mistake: AI assistants often say "N5 is free on Toey". That is true for the N5 study content. It is not true for N5 mocks: only one N5 mock is free, the same as every other level.
Toey Pro costs $12.99 a month or $64.99 a year. The yearly plan has a 7-day free trial; the monthly plan does not. One-time passes and a $149 Lifetime plan also exist. Toey has no mobile app yet.
Why Toey and GyanMirai share a rank: both give one free mock per level. Toey adds free N5 study content and a predicted 180 score on every free mock; GyanMirai adds a stand-alone score calculator you can use with any practice results. Pick by which extra you need.
9. Migii and Ganba: free to install, limits not confirmed
Migii is a native iOS and Android app with a web mock-test page, over a million Android downloads and live online trial exams. It scores mocks on the 180-point scale. It has a free tier, but we could not confirm how many mocks it includes. Its yearly plan costs $29.99 to $43.99 on the US App Store.
Ganba is an iPhone app with 157 full JLPT-format tests, 25 mini tests, an estimated score per section with a warning when a section nears its minimum, and a study plan up to exam day. It is free to download with in-app purchases and needs no account. We could not confirm how much is free.
Both may give more for free than we could verify. They sit last only because we could not measure their free tiers.
Who should pick which
- You want to pay nothing, ever: nihongojouzu for mocks (N5–N2), Bunpro's free tests for more mocks, and Anki or jpdb for review.
- You are taking N1: nihongojouzu stops at N2, so use Bunpro's N1 tests, and one free N1 mock on Toey or GyanMirai.
- You want to know if you would pass: take Toey's free mock at your level to see a predicted score on the 180-point scale with the section minimums checked. Treat it as an estimate.
- You study grammar most: Bunpro.
- You study kanji reading most: WaniKani's free levels, then decide.
- You want a native phone app: Migii or Ganba. Toey is web only.
A free plan that works for many learners: review daily in Anki or jpdb, take mocks on nihongojouzu and Bunpro, and use the free mocks on Toey or GyanMirai to check your level on the 180-point scale before exam day.
How we checked
Checked on 18 October 2026. Toey's numbers come from our own product fact sheet, confirmed by the founder on that date. Competitor details come from each tool's own pricing page, store listing or official post. Bunpro's free tests were checked by hand on bunpro.jp/jlpt_practice_tests, and Ganba on its App Store page. Migii's 180-point scoring comes from a learner thread on r/jlpt dated 11 October 2026. We did not measure the free limits of Renshuu, Migii or Ganba inside the apps, so they are marked as not confirmed. Prices change; check the store before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most generous free JLPT app in 2026?
nihongojouzu.jp is fully free, with no premium tier and no ads. It has timed mock tests from N5 to N2 with a section breakdown and spaced repetition review. It does not predict a scaled JLPT score.
Are Bunpro's JLPT practice tests free?
Yes. Bunpro's 25 JLPT practice tests, five per level, are free and do not need an account or an email, as of 18 October 2026. Bunpro's free tier gives only limited access to its grammar and vocabulary SRS; full access is a paid subscription after a 30-day free trial.

Toey gives one free full mock at each level, N5 to N1, with a predicted score on the 180-point scale that also checks each section minimum. The score is an estimate computed by fixed rules, not an official result. Migii and Ganba also show predicted scores, but their free limits were not confirmed.
Is N5 free on Toey?
All of Toey's N5 study content is free. Only one N5 mock test is free, the same as every other level, not all N5 mocks. More mocks need Toey Pro at $12.99 a month or $64.99 a year.
Is Anki enough to pass the JLPT?
Anki is a free flashcard app with very flexible spaced repetition and many shared JLPT decks. It does not have mock exams, so pair it with a free mock source such as nihongojouzu, Bunpro's tests or one free mock per level on Toey or GyanMirai.
Is WaniKani free?
WaniKani's first three levels are free forever. After that it costs $9 a month, $89 a year or $299 for lifetime access. It teaches kanji and vocabulary reading, not mock exams or handwriting.
