Understanding the Importance of Paraphrasing
One common issue I see among IELTS candidates is the struggle with paraphrasing. Many learners tend to repeat phrases directly from the prompt or source material instead of rephrasing them. This can significantly lower your score in the Writing section, as it may show a limited vocabulary range and a lack of understanding of the topic.
For instance, if the task asks you to discuss the benefits of exercise, simply repeating the phrase "the benefits of exercise" won't help you score well. Instead, you could say:
Exercise provides numerous advantages for physical and mental health.
By paraphrasing effectively, you demonstrate your ability to use a variety of vocabulary and sentence structures, both of which are crucial for achieving a higher band score.
Techniques for Effective Paraphrasing
To paraphrase successfully, it’s essential to understand the underlying meaning of the text and then express that meaning in your own words. Here’s how you can do it:
1. Use Synonyms
One of the simplest ways to paraphrase is to replace words with their synonyms. However, ensure that you understand the context to avoid misinterpretation.
Original: Many students struggle with time management. Paraphrased: Numerous learners find it challenging to manage their time effectively.
2. Change the Sentence Structure
Altering the structure of a sentence can also help in paraphrasing. This might include changing from active to passive voice or altering the order of information.
Original: The government should invest in renewable energy sources. Paraphrased: Investing in renewable energy sources is a responsibility that the government must undertake.
3. Break Down Complex Sentences
If the original text is complex, consider breaking it down into simpler parts.
Original: The rapid advancement of technology has led to a significant increase in productivity across various industries. Paraphrased: Technology has advanced quickly, resulting in a notable rise in productivity in many sectors.
