When it comes to IELTS Writing, particularly Task 2, many learners struggle with the concepts of cohesion and coherence. These two elements are critical to achieving a high band score, as they ensure that your essay is not only well-structured but also easy to follow.
Cohesion refers to how well your sentences and paragraphs connect with each other using linking words and phrases. Coherence, on the other hand, is about the logical flow of ideas throughout your essay. Without these two elements, even the best ideas can become muddled, leading to confusion for the reader.

One common mistake I see is the lack of clear connections between sentences and paragraphs. Students might write great points but fail to link them effectively. This often results in essays that feel disjointed, which can negatively impact their scores.

To illustrate this, consider the following example of a poorly cohesive paragraph:
The environment is changing rapidly. Many animals are in danger. Pollution is a big issue. We should do something.
In this example, while the points are valid, the sentences do not flow logically from one to the next. Now, let’s revise this for better cohesion and coherence:
The environment is changing rapidly due to human activity, leading to many animals being in danger. One of the primary contributors to this issue is pollution, which has severe consequences for wildlife. Therefore, it is imperative that we take action to address this pressing problem.
Notice how the revised version uses linking phrases like “due to,” “leading to,” and “therefore” to connect ideas more effectively.
Step-by-Step Approach to Improving Cohesion and Coherence
- Plan Your Essay: Before writing, outline your main points and how they will connect. This provides a roadmap for your argument.
- Use Linking Words: Integrate a variety of cohesive devices such as conjunctions (and, but), transition words (however, therefore), and phrases (for example, in addition) to connect your ideas.
- Paragraph Structure: Ensure each paragraph has a clear main idea and that the supporting sentences relate back to this idea. Start with a topic sentence to guide the reader.
